The magnificent Russian Museum filled with fine art, originally the Mikailovsky Palace, could have easily taken a week to appreciate. Each room was filled with fabulous paintings by brilliant artists rarely heard of, each room tended soberly by old ladies with handbags and attendants in socks and sandals.
The Mikhailovsky Castle had a more modren art exhibition, also demanding much time and energy to fully appreciate.
Onion domes in the square adorning an ancient church in the square were an unexpected pleasure.
We saw the Marble Palace and the Stroganov Palace from the outside only, and the Winter Palace was closed, but magnificent nonetheless.
Riverboats did cruises along the many canals and islands of St Petersburg and this was a highlight of our day. We saw many of the architectural jewels from different angles.
All these places were within walking distance from out apartment run by Natalia. It overlooked the market section of the city.

ReplyDeletelots of lovely arty palacey viewing to be had. Lots of poverty and dirt and yukkiness to prove the point and highlight the difference.
