A Day in the Garden and an Evening with Friends at Berwick St James

It was very hard to tear Richard away from Mevagissey, but the country called. Berwick St James required a jolly jaunt into the country, driving through more country wooded groves. We called in on Stonehenge - large and looming on the plain (bound by ropes and fences now - no longer free and unfettered). Then called in on Salisbury Cathedral (just outside and in the grounds - the inside filled with stores and tourists and lines and inner buildings for souvenirs). It would appear it is no longer a house of prayer, but is still maintained and kept by the proceeds of the shops and donations required.

Our B&B is called The Mill House. Michael Mertens lives with mother - Diana Gifford-Mead. She used to hunt. Her trophies hang on the wall in the stairwell. The buzzard oversees the breakfast table.
The Mill House is a quaint old cottage with a river running through the front yard. The garden is magnificent as is the countryside surrounding Berwick St James. The yard is filled with statues and trees and as many flowers as possible. The meadows have cows and all sorts of wildlife.

We settle in and head off for a turn around the garden.
The River Till runs at the foot of the garden, turning the paddles of the mill.
We saw ducks, voles, swans, cows, birds and so many different flowers. Bird calls filled the silence, all new and different. Occasionally a splash is heard and a shuffling. Vole cleans up the front parlor to his waterside home, glancing briefly at the onlooker, then on about his business.

We had arranged to meet friends - Dee and Phillip for dinner at the Pelican Inn. What a treat! It was so nice to see them and spend time together. Thank you Dee and Phillip for making our stay on Berwick St James so special.
