We drove through Captain Cook's birthplace. We discovered Hawes - a place we must come back to.
Travelling from York to Coniston (Yew Tree Farm) involved a planned traversing of the country and driving through three national parks: the North York Moors, the Yorkshire Dales and the Lakes.
All three are beautiful, all three are different, all three deserve more than the cursory glance we gave them.
The moors are spectacular - wild and rugged, tufty with heather and expansive. Whitby is a large seaside town that has a ruined abbey, rather graphic against the skyline.
The dales are all that Herriot described and more. So pretty it was hard to drive more than ten yards without stopping for more photos, the stone fences, green pastures, babbling brooks and sheep in the fields.
The lakes district is different again; high mountains, wooded hills, flowers and waterfalls. There are many farms and walks and a huge variety of domestic and wild life to be found.
The Lakes District is where Beatrix Potter's place is: Yew Tree Farm. We are staying there...
I feel like I should say something more intelligent than, "That's so pretty". But it really is just beautiful. Wish I was there!! xxx
ReplyDeleteHi Kerrie an Richard,
ReplyDeleteI'm really enjoying being a 'silent' travel companion. It's cold and wet in Canberra, second week of our school hols. When I get back to school. I'll astound everyone with my virtual trip. Your photos, movies and comments capture the scenery and ambience superbly! Thanks for inviting me along for the ride.
Bethany - you are with us constantly. There are references about what you (and others in the family) would like and do punctuating our walks and sightseeing all the time as we know how much you would enjoy this trip :)
ReplyDeleteRoslyn - you are so kind. I am pleased you are able to gain some vicarious pleasure travelling with us. Please share this experience with as many as you like! I thank you for your encouragement, and think of you as I sit on Beatrix Potter's floor (at 5 in the cold rainy morning with a cough and a head and the sheep calling and the water bubbling away in the background). There may be a blog that is less glossy and pretty that is more real than pretty - one that tells of the stairs and aches and tiredness, the effort and not-so-nice parts, but in the meantime enjoy the good bits, because they are SO good, and worth the pain.
