A Day in Riga

Riga is a large place. The people say that it was like its own state - Riga and then Latvia.
The people are friendly and the public transport system works well. Tram fares are only $1 from the beginning of the line to the end. They are neat and clean.

There is an old town and a huge new metropolis. We explored the old town. The town clock, Freedom Square, cobbled roads, stalls, buskers, all familiar sights now. The beautiful river that flows through the centre of town is a delight. Paddle boats and picnickers decorate it. Everyone is walking around with bunches of flowers.

The lake near our B&B can take you by ferry to Helsinki. The warm summer days mean the white skinned children can play in the water and splash and run long into the night. The sun sets at about 11.

The grand houses in this neighbourhood are nestled in the forests and flowers, all green and lush

The walking tracks are good, the weather is kind, the people are friendly and generous, the food is delicious.

The hospitality of our hosts extended to an invitation to the child's birthday. Carlos is 9 today. It is also my birthday. The whole family is coming to visit, so were included as part of the family for a 5 course meal, cake, singing and stories. As much beer and wine as we like. Such warmth. The ladies conspired, then burst into "Happy Birthday" in English, smiles on their faces and hugs when they said goodbye.
