One day only and what to do? The big buddha, the cable cars, shopping, swimming or a seaside village?
Pink dolphins called and we planned our travel on the excellent public transport system to visit the quaint village of Tai O.
The trains, ferries and buses all operate under a prepaid card system a little like the ones used for phones. As you go through the turnstiles you flash the card and the amount for the fare and the amount left on the card is shown. The fares are cheap, the transport efficient and clean and the ride enjoyable and everything is oh so easy it is scary.
Our destination was Tai O, a little fishing village, that has houses on stilts, pink dolphins and lots of fish. Fresh fish, dried fish, fresh other swimming creatures, dried bits of other creatures and rambling narrow alleys with shops selling all things fishy.
We went from train to train, then bus to the village, past prisons, over mountains and along coastlines. we saw buffalo beside the road, majestic mountains and gorgeous beaches. The people were helpful but it against the law to talk to the bus driver. I broke the law when I said 'thank you'.
Straight off the bus and onto the little boat and up the river past the stilt houses then out past ancient boats into the ocean to look for dolphins. They were shy today. No amount of squinting and straining would do. Back to the shore and up the alleyways to see what a fishing village sells.
Curiosity overrides squeamishness most of the time, but not this time.
