The rug maker

Culture corner score!
Just a stop over. Book a guesthouse in Dubai. Just a room. No need for fancyschmancy in Dubai. The glitz and glamour is evident at the airport. Arrived at the guesthouse. Found it to be next to a school and museum and happens to be the very nicest part of the spice trading wholesale area in the city.

The oasis inside our guesthouse has a water fountain, fake palms and all manner of art. Luxurious curtains and woodwork bespeak former glories and riches, reflected in the tall mirrored columns and brash displays of wealth elsewhere.

There is an art exhibition in the long room. Local women artists have banded together. Shelves display cushions and beads and cloths. Tucked away in the corner is a man weaving a rug. His hands move so quickly no eye but his could follow.

Ancient patterns emerge on our side, unintelligible and brown on his side. He stops his work and shows us his rugs. Glorious.
Later we see him change a light.
