Lisbon

The capital of Portugal, of course on the sea. The Portuguese were such a sea faring nation and this is still evident in the canals of "little Venice", Costa Nova (beach side town with stripy cottages) and the long port with big ships and train stations alongside.

The town is hilly with churches and castles, trams and three wheeled enclosed scooters. The trams look like fun but we walk from the Art Beat rooms where we are staying to the old part of the city, then backtrack to explore the new upmarket shopping district with trendy dining and designer clothes, designer men, and air conditioned shiny shopping centres. The dog yelps and old woman sentinels more than a few kilometers away... more like a lifetime or two.

Fado is advertised in the old part, down from the church where the old woman pats her breast and talks to herself lost in some other time. Maybe later we will have some paella there and listen to the traditional music.

A tourist group explores the street and makes it hard to pass by, the walls allowing only one or two at a time to pass.

Afternoon tea and a coffee or two with a Portuguese tart. Best ever.
We have bests.
The best hot chocolate (was Gamlestan, now Sapa)
The best Portuguese tart (Lisbon)
The best coffee (Lisbon)..for Richard
The best meal ( the Etna... As she was erupting)
The best salmon (Geiranger)
The best panna cotta (Wollongong)
The best steak (Bowral)
The best gelato (Matera and Milan)

There are hardly any t shirts with writing on them here. Everyone is well dressed. Lots of smoking and outdoor dining. Stylishness for all ages.
Really good shoes, haven't found any to buy though.
