Do you remember those lovely funny name games of early school years? The authors of fictional books - Horror Stories by R U Scared, The Worst Striker by Mr Goal, Why You Need Insurance by Justin Case, Adding Up by Juan & Juan. Then there are the repeat names like William Williamson and Roger Rogerson. Some names are just not thought through but all too real - Dwayne Pipe, Jo King, or others the jokes of little children discovering language - Theresa Green, Hazel Nutt and Ben Dover.
Married names turn innocence into interest; Vi King, Faith Christian, May Day. Then there are jobs with fitting names Mr Lazarus the grave digger, Mrs Story the English teacher, Mrs Cooke, Dr Death.
Loving language is exciting an adds richness to our existence. Exploring the cultures of other countries exposes the purveyor to all sorts of weird and wonderful words - place names and people's names.
England has a wealth of gorgeous place names - Giggleswick, Biggleswade, Great Snoring, Druggers End, Barton Upon Humber, Chipping Sodbury, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Moss of Barmucketty and Oswaldtwistle just to name a few. What a glorious game to discover and share the wonderful wordishness our language affords. Delight and chuckles believing the signs and labels.
Latest delight....a unique name - a landlady of one of the B&Bs - Diga Daga of Riga. Share your favourite please.
