I became a 2 millionaire today. 2,000,000 Dong that is and it is just enough to pay for visas on arrival in Vietnam.
I like to have things 'to hand' but this has left me not quite sure how to organise wallets and change purses and bags.

Avoid using your credit card. They add 3% commission on top of the rest of the charges. You'll have no problems changing Australian dollars in the gold shops. They give better than bank rate. I do however recommend you bring $100 U.S. in small clean bills until you find your feet. The Commonwealth Bank of Australia has a branch in Saigon. Unlike the ANZ bank this is an actual branch. You can draw 9'000'000 per withdrawal from their auto-teller up to your limit, for $2 Aust per withdrawal.
Also with such high denominations of note, be careful of common scams run by street sellers where you are short changed by a factor of ten (eg as part of your change, you may receive five 200 dong notes as "10,000 VND!").

The word đồng is from the term đồng tiền ("money"), a cognate of the Chinese tóng qián (Traditional Chinese: 銅錢; Simplified Chinese: 铜钱). The term refers to Chinese bronze coins used as currency during the dynastic periods of China and Vietnam. The term hào is a cognate of the Chinese háo(Chinese: 毫), meaning a tenth of a currency unit.
